By Molly Yanity ESPN.com Look over the mountain. You'll see it really quickly, but keep watching, you'll see it again. It very well could be the Northern Lights you're searching for, but not this time. Look and see Jason Borgstede catch air on his snowboard. There he is, a flash of color and daring as he performs a jump.
Borgstede could be compared to the Northern Lights in more than one respect. Not only is he the first to brag about his Alaskan roots, but he also has become quite the bright vision. A summer resident of Eagle River, Alaska, the 24-year-old returns to Winter X as the defending champ in the Big Air competition. "My most memorable contest this season was the Winter X Games Big Air. It took place a few days after my birthday and gave my family and friends all over the country a chance to see me do what I love to do," he said. The 1998 Winter X Games served as a springboard for Borgstede as he went on to win the Overall Freestyle title for the ESPN Freeride Contest, as well as take victories in the CBS Master of the Board and the Bud Light Big Air Series in Snoqualmie Pass, Wash. "As far as my future goes, I just want to be at the forefront of progressive freestyle snowboarding," said Borgstede, who is working to create new tricks for the '99 X Games. "I want to be one of the names kids look to for what's new in freestyle."
