By Mike Nick Special to ESPN.com Last year's Winter X Games was easily the biggest event of my life personally, as well as for the sport of skiboarding. Winning the first-ever gold medal at stake in a sport that has progressed in leaps and bounds over such a short period of time is an honor that can't be described in words.
However, being a pioneer in a sport that has made such a strong surge towards becoming the "next big thing" in winter sports is an ongoing challenge. Last year's X Games was followed up by the U.S. Freeskiing Open at Vail, where I took first place in the Big Air comp, in addition to some small local comps where I place no lower than second. Another opportunity came up, the opportunity to start filming the first-ever skiboardiing video. A man with a dream named Boomer from Front Side Inc. decided it was time to pick up where the X Games left off. ESPN put our sport on the map by letting us participate in the games, but Boomer was going to try and legitimize us as a hard-core sport with a style of our own. It worked!! From January to July we filmed all over the country and into Canada. Traveling, filming and riding from Vermont to California, Oregon, British Columbia and Colorado, myself and 10 to 12 other pro riders were able to ride and train for next year's X Games. Over those seven months we were able to take the sport of skiboarding to levels it has never seen, and thanks to Boomer he was there to capture it all on film in skiboarding's debut video, SB1, A Skiboarding Journey. From the day I left the X Games last January with my medal in hand I was able to admit to myself that I had finally accomplished one of my dreams, yet it was not over by any means. Now I had to get ready to try and repeat. Riding more days than I ever had in one season and making six trips to the West Coast riding at some of the best resorts in North America, I pushed myself harder than ever to learn new tricks and fine-tune everything I could do in hopes of staying on top of my game. Hopefully that would keep me in the same standings as last year. This past summer was packed with three weeks of riding and training at Mount Hood, where myself and Jason Levinthal hosted the first-ever skiboard camp put on by our sponsor, Line Skiboards! We rode, filmed and kept on pushing ourselves, knowing that when we left Hood we would not ride for a couple of months until the East Coast received its first taste of snow. For the next four months from July to October myself and the rest of the Line riders did the next best thing: We spent the rest of our time inline skating mini and vert ramps to stay in shape and getting as close to skiboarding as we could without snow. We were able to work on certain tricks and even learn new things that will be easily crossed over onto the hill. We did a lot of launching into foam pits and worked on trampolines as much as we possibly could.
So basically I've done everything I could possibly do to stay on top, now all I can do is hit the early snow and see if it all pays off.
