Blog That Kick: Week 7

October 16, 2009

Iowa fans like shuman346 should beware. When your team reaches this point in the season undefeated, every blogger starts eyeing it as a potential upset victim.

In addition to Hawkeyes-Badgers, fans who blogged about football this week are looking forward to the Sooners-Longhorns and Trojans-Irish rivalry games this weekend.

On sideline topics, Florida State did nothing to quiet the debate between the camp that believes Bobby Bowden's record speaks for itself and those who ask what the Seminoles coach has done lately for the team's win-loss record.

These are the best college football fan blogs of the week. Click through to comment, disagree and discuss your favorite teams.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin over No. 11 Iowa. Let's face it, has Iowa really proved themselves this year? Wisconsin at home in my mind is an easy pick.

-- gbirkem2
Florida State

Now, I'm gonna break down the men I think should lead Florida State University: 1. Jim Leavitt; 2. Tommy Tuberville; 3. Kevin Sumlin; 4. Jimbo Fisher.

Jimmy Clausen

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. When Jimmy Clausen gives you lemons, you thank him and walk away slowly.

Just out of curiosity, how do we know the guy on the Heisman isn't trying to stiff-arm a defender about to blow up a sweep and drop him behind the line of scrimmage?

It has been more than a decade since Charles Woodson, with the assistance of some point-producing kick returns, won college football's most famous individual honor as a defensive player. With Tim Tebow and Colt McCoy around this season, that's not likely to change. (Sorry, Sam Bradford; the yardage against Baylor was nice, but SportsNation voters say you missed too much time). But a pair of defensive players, Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh and Alabama's Rolando McClain, make appearances on this week's ESPN.com Heisman Watch.

Suh and McClain may be the longest of shots, but does the Heisman need to start rewarding defensive players to remain relevant? Will we really keep getting worked up about an award for the best quarterback on a good team?

josh (il)

Are the days of non-QB's winning the Heisman trophy over? Suh from Nebraska seems as important to his team as Tebow is for Florida.

Mark Schlabach
Pat Forde

Or Eric Berry or Gerald McCoy or Eric Norwood. They have awards for defensive players, too. I'm not sure they'll win the Heisman.

Chris (Lynchburg, VA)

Mark your rationale for the answer about Suh and the Heisman makes zero sense. The Heisman isn't an offensive award, according to the Heisman Trophy Trust, it's for the "most outstanding player in college football." Do you truly believe Suh isn't one of the best players in college football?

Mark Schlabach
Mark Schlabach

I think he's one of the best players in the country. I think he's an All-American at his position. Is he the best DT in the Big 12? McCoy is pretty good, too. Eric Berry is the best defensive player in the country, in my opinion. Full transcript.

Colt McCoy has thrown five interceptions in four games. Tim Tebow has completed 19 passes against non-FCS opponents. And yet it's not all that easy to argue against the two of them splitting all 15 first-place votes in this week's ESPN.com Heisman Watch.

SportsNation tried to branch out in its rankings last week, giving the Heisman nod to Cal running back Jahvid Best, only to see him go silent in a bad loss at Oregon. Voters also ranked Jacory Harris third a week ago, ahead of McCoy. Miami's quarterback rewarded that faith by floundering at Virginia Tech.

So will this be strictly a two-person race, or is there room for more at the top?

Chaz (Chicago)

Is it possible that Jimmy Clausen is underrated? His numbers are amazing. His performance has been top drawer in every game this year. And he's proving to be one tough competitor playing w/ a tough injury for QBs. Yet, no one is talking about him for the Heisman-- when he should be in the conversation.

Mark Schlabach
c

He earned a lot of my respect Saturday night by going back into the game with the toe injury and throwing the winning TD. His numbers have been great. He'd probably be in my top five today, but the Irish couldn't lose another game for him to stay there. Full transcript.

lazarre11

Mardy Gilyard for heisman, how many diffrent ways does the kid has to score to get some heisman buzz. Do they want him to teleport to the endzone? He is by far the most exciting player to watch since young & bush.

-- lazarre11
bodhisamaya

Tebow has less than impressive numbers and is a runaway Heisman favorite? The Gators would be dominant with or without him. He is getting far too much credit for the talent around him.

The Heisman's New Best Option?

September 29, 2009
Sep

Carrying Minnesota didn't help Walter Mondale much (add that reference to the Herschel Walker post, throw in some Cure and you've got yourself a retro day in SportsNation), but carrying in Minnesota may prove to be the launching pad for Jahvid Best's Heisman run.

Combined with USC's loss at Washington, which presumably puts Cal in the Pac-10 driver's seat, Best earned a lot of eyeballs with five touchdowns and 131 rushing yards on the road against the Golden Gophers.

And once again, under the guise of a reality check, a look at how SportsNation's Heisman top five looked at this point in the season two years ago.

1. Andre Woodson, QB, Kentucky
2. Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
3. Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU
4. Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
5. Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville

callitirishdominance

Take Tebow out of the top 5. I don't care who replaces him, but Tebow doesn't deserve it yet. What a boring, not impressive in any way performance against a lame Tenn. team.

Blog that kick: Week 3

September 18, 2009
Sep

Two topics dominated college football fan blogs this week: resurgence and the Tennessee-Florida jawing.

Just about everybody outside of Knoxville wants the Gators to shut up Lane Kiffin. Just about everybody in Ann Arbor now believes. Just about everybody in the ACC is now afraid of Miami again.

Here are the voices and predictions and reactions of all the college football fans who blogged on ESPN.com this week:

Tennessee

As a Vols fan, I have hope that the Big Orange can somehow win this game: hope and a prayer with a little luck sprinkled in.

-- LANETRAIN09
Florida

The only song Tennessee will be singing is Brahms' Lullaby after the Florida defense knocks them out. Florida 70, Tennessee 14.

-- JoeRevs300

Nebraska-Virginia Tech: "The Hokies have one of the best dual-threat QBs in the nation. ... The Huskers have the difficult task of playing Virginia Tech in Lane Stadium, arguably one of the best home-field advantages in all of college football. FINAL SCORE: Virginia Tech 31, Nebraska 21." -- uclabruin094

Texas Tech-Texas: "Texas 45, Texas Tech 28. Texas is more experienced, has Colt McCoy, and has home field to boot." -- txtechjmacattack

Utah-Oregon: "Oregon's high-flying offense has scored only 47 points the last two games. How will the defense hold up against this Utah offense? Utah 31-18." -- tjroundup

Michigan

Two weeks ago I was reading posts from Michigan faithful, that made them sound worse than Buckeye fans. ... So to all the posters throughout the country that constantly took shots at Michigan, I guess my question is 'what's up now?'

-- debakes10
Miami

The Miami Hurricanes are relevant again in college football and quite realistically in the BCS picture.

-- SeAGoBLin15
Notre Dame

For Notre Dame and Coach Weis the questions have turned into demands from 'are we there yet?' to 'you better get us there and soon.'

Are We Becoming Less Civil?

September 16, 2009
Sep
16

We're going to talk about civility. And if you don't like it, you can take that keyboard and shove it ... sorry, we got a little worked up.

Kanye West and Rep. Joe Wilson have made civility a hot topic in recent days, but the sports world can be plenty uncivil all on its own, thank you very much. Serena Williams went off on a lines person at the U.S. Open, Roger Federer dropped in a few choice words of his own in the men's final and Bills returner Leodis McKelvin found his lawn vandalized in the wake of a costly turnover against the Patriots Monday. Pouring a beer on Shane Victorino seems almost quaint.

Next on the agenda? Tennessee's visit to Florida, with almost 90 percent of voters convinced Urban Meyer will make the most of any opportunity to run up the score against Lane Kiffin. Would Meyer be adding to the list of wrongs or striking a blow for civility if he did?

Jesse111080

Wow! I realize that emotions can make people do regretful things, but to vandalize someone's property over a GAME is over the line. Football players are human too, and they have families and children. Maybe McKelvin deserves to be booed but not this. If you bet money on the game and lost and you're pissed enough to vandalize people's property over it, then maybe you shouldn't be betting on games. I have had my share of meltdowns over football(lol I'm a Jets fan!), but I would never take it that far.

-- Jesse111080
ottomason

Here it comes Tennessee. Here it comes. After all that trash talk by your head coach, you are now going to have to stand up and get punched in the face. This game was going to be a beat down before all of this happened but Kiffin gave the Gators one thing they didn't need in the first place, motivation. Say what you want, hope for all you're worth, pray all night. It won't mater on Saturday. When the Gators are beating you by 40 in the 4th quarter, the football is going to be thrown into the end zone over and over with the score climbing higher and higher. And while it's happening just rememeber one thing, you asked for it.

The Best Snead Since Sam

July 24, 2009
Jul
24

Pat Forde calls it a "live-action game of Clue" in the SEC. Nick Saban says anyone should be free to vote as he chooses, but while he has you, he'd like you to know he voted for the guy from Florida. And we're just wondering who the coach was who voted for Pat Buchanan.

It's SEC all-conference voting drama, and it's ... well, fantastic probably isn't the right word. But it's football talk in the dog days of July. Sort of.

All of the controversy rages because a conference coach dared vote for Mississippi's Jevan Snead ahead of Florida's Tim Tebow for the All-SEC team. Now, Snead beat Tebow in Gainesville last season, and Mel Kiper recently offered in chat that Snead is on par with Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford as an NFL prospect. But for all of that, SportsNation sides with the outrage.

Edit (10:45 ET): And if this was a game of Clue, apparently it would be Steve Spurrier with the visor in the coach's office, as SEC blogger Chris Low recounts. Now we can all move on to matters of more import; like which Starbucks barista intentionally left the vanilla out of Tim Tebow's latte.

elgecko84

I agree with Cowherd on this one, if Snead beat Tebow head to head with inferior talent in the Swamp, why wouldn't you put him ahead of Tebow? I understand that Gator fans love him, and other SEC teams fans' piggyback on him (which is really the only conference where that happens), but seriously, I could have quarterbacked the Gators to a title. Now if there was an all-conference team for good-guy athletes, sure put him at the front. I don't see this as a big deal, someone didn't suck up to Tebow for the first time in 2 years.

-- elgecko84
crimsonandbluejayhawk

Boo hoo, somebody didn't vote for Tim Tebow, he's God and you should all worship him, how dare you not vote for him!!!! Seriously, it's the Preseason, why should anyone care? Tebow himself hardly even cares.
