CONCACAF Power Rankings: Costa Rica on top

United States head coach Jurgen Klinsmann thinks his team need to get tougher following their 4-1 loss to Ireland in Dublin.

The 2014 international year is in the books and by the time the nations of CONCACAF resume action in March, the 2015 Gold Cup will be just a few months away.

Since the World Cup, several countries' performances have improved noticeably while others have declined. In the great spirit of the CONCACAF Hexagonal, it only makes sense for ESPN FC to debut its regional Power Rankings with its top six teams, plus a list of ones to watch come 2015.

1. Costa Rica

Cue the arched eyebrows and quizzical looks....

Looking back on the night the United States saved Mexico

Ninety-five seconds.

That is all that separated Mexico from not qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. Ninety-five seconds from hundreds of millions of dollars in sponsorship money down the drain. Ninety-five seconds from more than a hundred million people, who have red, green and white running through their veins, dealing with the indignity of their national team failing to qualify for the world's most decorated sporting event.

Mexico earn result over Panama but plenty of work remains

Erick "Cubo" Torres broke the deadlock at the death for Mexico as they defeated Panama 1-0 in an international friendly.

Mexico may have narrowly beat Panama 1-0 on Sunday, but there were very obvious cracks and flaws for El Tri throughout the match.

Marco Fabian's yellow card felt symbolic for the team and their performance in Queretaro. After what looked like a scene from a WWE match, Fabian received a yellow for his clumsy tackle and a grapple on a Panamanian midfielder. Fabian was desperate to get to the ball but was unable to deal with the physicality from his opponent -- which is exactly what happened to El...

Player Ratings: El Tri win, but look unimpressive vs. Panama

Erick "Cubo" Torres broke the deadlock at the death for Mexico as they defeated Panama 1-0 in an international friendly.

Perhaps the heat in Queretaro contributed to a sluggish start for Mexico against Panama, but until an 89th minute strike by Erick "Cubo" Torres, it was a mostly forgettable game for El Tri.

To a certain extent, one could consider the victory a gift by Panama's goalkeeper, who made two glaring mistakes and was finally punished on the second one.

Mexico will take the win, but must look hard at specific shortcomings in order to improve. Here are their player ratings for the match.

Three Points: Mexico vs. Panama

Erick "Cubo" Torres broke the deadlock at the death for Mexico as they defeated Panama 1-0 in an international friendly.

QUERETARO, Mexico -- Mexico scraped out a 1-0 victory over Panama in La Corregidora on Sunday, with a late goal by Chivas USA striker Erick "Cubo" Torres earning El Tri its third victory in four games since Brazil 2014. Torres struck one minute before the end after a blunder from Panama keeper Oscar McFarlane, but it was a stale, turgid performance from Mexico and a match of few real chances.

Here are three quick thoughts from a Mexico perspective:

1. Mexico still needs a Plan B
