Stakes are high in South American friendlies as players look to impress

Brazil's Rafael Cabral, Uruguay's Giorgian De Arrascaeta and Peru's Carlos Ascues all have the chance to stake their claim for a national team spot in the coming weeks.

As the Copa America (next June and July in Chile) draws nearer, the stakes rise for South America's national teams. For the moment, the teams are just playing friendlies, but the competitive matches are coming closer: the next set of World Cup qualifiers get going soon after the Copa.

In 2015 there is only one set of FIFA dates before the real stuff starts. Over the next few days, then, some interesting experiments will be carried out with coaches wanting to take a long, hard look at some of their...

Instability continues to stunt growth of Bolivian football

Mauricio Soria led Bolivia to a rare impressive result last month, but controversial comments could keep him from the full-time manager's job.

Bolivia pushed defending champions Germany all the way before going down by the only goal in the opening game of the 1994 World Cup. They drew with South Korea and had their moments against Spain before losing 3-1.

ARGENTINA: Won 4-2 away to Germany, lost 2-0 to Brazil and beat Hong Kong 7-0

New coach Gerardo Martino has built on the work of predecessor Alejandro Sabella but has also made a tweak. The base formation remains 4-3-3 (which Sabella's Argentina abandoned in the World Cup due to injuries), but with a difference.

Instead...

Mexico national and MLS star Erick Torres features in 1-0 win vs. Bolivia

In their latest international friendly, Mexico had a tidy, if unspectacular, 1-0 victory over a lackluster but doggedly-defensive Bolivia squad. The win marked coach Miguel "Piojo" Herrera's first win since the World Cup. It also introduced a new star for El Tri.

Yet it wasn't the player who actually scored the goal. Miguel Layun is already an established star, long a favorite of Mexican fans for his role with Club America, one of the top clubs in Liga MX. Under Herrera, Layun transitioned well...
