Australia kick off 2018 World Cup campaign in Perth vs. Bangladesh

Managers and representatives from Australia, Japan and China react following the draw for the first stage of AFC 2018 World Cup qualifying held in Kuala Lumpur.

PERTH, Australia -- Asian Cup champions Australia will play its first home match of its 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign in Perth, Western Australia on Sept. 3 against Bangladesh.

Football Federation Australia announced on Wednesday that it will be the first Socceroos match in Perth in 10 years and Australia's first home match since winning the Asian Cup in January.

Australia's other opponents in Asian qualifying Group B for Russia are Jordan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Australia face logistical challenge from 2018 WCQ draw - coach Postecoglou

ESPN FC's Jason Dasey and John Wilkinson assess the positives from Australia's performance against Germany.

Australia coach Ange Postecoglou has described their 2018 World Cup qualifying draw as a logistical "challenge" with the Socceroos facing long journeys across Asia.

The 2015 Asian Cup champions avoided Japan, South Korea and Asia's top-ranked FIFA side Iran as they were drawn against Jordan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Bangladesh in the first stage of qualifiers through the Asian Football Confederation.

The qualifiers for the 2018 tournament in Russia also double as qualifiers for the next...

Macedonia stalemate gives Socceroos taste of World Cup qualifying to come

Asian Cup champions Australia failed to scale the heights of their Germany performance against minnows Macedonia.

From the highs of going toe-to-toe with world champions Germany on their own patch, to the lows of playing against European minnows in a half-empty stadium on a freezing Monday night ... the Socceroos have experienced both extremes over the past five days.

While their 0-0 draw away to Macedonia may seem like a frustrating and largely pointless exercise to some, it could actually give Australia a taste of what is to come in their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Australia coach Ange Postecoglou says Macedonia was learning curve

Australia coach Ange Postecoglou says the bumpy surface in Skopje prevented his side from playing attractive football.

Australia coach Ange Postecoglou says that his team's underwhelming performance as they drew 0-0 against European minnows Macedonia in Skopje on Monday night is all part of a learning curve for the recently crowned Asian champions.

The Socceroos extended their unbeaten streak to five matches, but created few clear cut chances against the Balkan nation, who are 108th in the FIFA rankings.

It was a far less impressive display from the visitors than their inspiring 2-2 draw against world champions...

Japan, Iran, Qatar keep Asian flag flying after Australia's heroics

A new-look Japan took the field on Friday night in Valid Halilhodzic's first game in charge, yet it was the old guard who came off the bench in Oita to secure a 2-0 win over Tunisia. It was a solid result and a satisfactory performance.

The Bosnian, who led Algeria to the last 16 at the 2014 World Cup, had promised to shake up a team that has looked in need of exactly that over the past few months. There were only two survivors from the 11 that started the last game, the quarterfinal of the 2015...
