Swiss players banned for cash to side who beat league rival

BERN, Switzerland -- Two Swiss top-tier players have been suspended for 12 matches over illegal payments to another team in last season's promotion chase.

The Swiss football league says it also fined Lugano players Patrick Rossini and Igor Djuric 8,000 Swiss francs ($8,200) each.

Lugano won the second division in May after a promotion duel with Servette.

The league says Rossini and Djuric approached Schaffhausen players and promised money for avoiding defeat in a late-season match at Servette.


FC Basel sign Marc Janko on free transfer from Sydney FC

Marc Janko will return to Europe after spending one season in Australia.

Swiss champions Basel say Austrian forward Marc Janko has joined on a free transfer from Sydney FC.

Janko signed a one-year contract with an option for a second season, the club announced on Thursday, the player's 32nd birthday.

The move brings Janko closer to home ahead of the 2016 European Championship being played in France.

Janko has scored three goals to help unbeaten Austria lead a qualifying group that includes Sweden and Russia.

Fabian Frei signs for Mainz from Basel

Fabian Frei has opted to move to the Bundesliga.

Bundesliga club Mainz have wasted no time in finding a replacement for Johannes Geis, signing Fabian Frei from Swiss champions Basel.

Frei has penned a four-year contract with the Bundesliga club and is believed to have cost half of the reported €10 million earned from the sale of Geis, whose transfer to Schalke was confirmed earlier on Tuesday.

Basel hire Urs Fischer to coach on 2-year deal

BASEL, Switzerland -- Swiss champion Basel has appointed Urs Fischer as coach on a two-year contract.

Fischer replaces former Portugal midfielder Paulo Sousa who was released from his contract on Wednesday. Sousa is expected to coach Fiorentina.

Fischer led Thun to a fourth-place finish in the Swiss League last season, and has also coached Zurich.
