Cash-strapped Serie B club Bologna are nearing a sale to a North American group.

BOLOGNA, Italy -- New York lawyer Joe Tacopina and Montreal Impact president Joey Saputo are promising to restore cash-strapped Serie B football club Bologna to its former glory.

The North Americans were presented as the new owners of the seven-time Serie A champion on Thursday.

"We plan to stay for decades, and our first goal is returning to Serie A," said Tacopina, the club's new president.

Saputo has been reported as the biggest investor in the deal.

Cash-strapped Serie B club Bologna are nearing a sale to a North American group.

New York lawyer Joe Tacopina is set to become the club president, with Montreal Impact president Joey Saputo the largest investor.

Tacopina and Saputo will reportedly make an initial investment of 13 million euros ($16.5 million) plus provide a seven million euros payout to the club's previous owners.

Since 2010, Bologna have been held by a consortium including coffee maker Massimo Zanetti.

Source: Kobe Bryant not involved in group's takeover of Bologna

Basketball star Kobe Bryant is not involved in an imminent sale of Italian Serie B club Bologna, a source told ESPN.

A report in Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport suggested that a consortium led by investor Joe Tacopina included the Los Angeles Lakers guard, but a source close to Bryant told ESPN.com's Marc Stein that he was not part of the deal for the second-division club.
