Serie A and Serie B need to be cut, says Italian FA chief Carlo Tavecchio

The recent comments from newly-elected FIGC chief Carlo Tavecchio have cast a shadow over Italian football.
Carlo Tavecchio is pushing ahead with plans to cut the number of clubs.

President of the Italian FA (FIGC) Carlo Tavecchio has renewed calls for the top two divisions of Italian football to be reduced in size to help free up time for the national team.

Italy coach Antonio Conte saw his request for a meeting earlier this month rejected by the clubs, who did not want to deprive themselves of players during the season on dates which were not set aside for internationals by FIFA.

According to Tavecchio, that could be avoided in future if there were fewer sides in Serie...

Italian FA must cut ties with 'irritating' Claudio Lotito, says Demetrio Albertini

Claudio Lotito has been criticised for his comments about the running of Serie A and Serie B.

Demetrio Albertini has branded Claudio Lotito "irritating" and says he should not be allowed to continue as an advisor to the Italian Football Association (FIGC).

Lazio president Lotito was recorded in a telephone conversation criticising Lega Serie A and Lega Serie B presidents and the potential promotion of Carpi -- currently leading Serie B -- to the top flight next season.

Lotito said that if clubs such as Carpi, Frosinone or Latina were promoted to Serie A, TV companies would refuse to...

Andrea Pierobon in action for Cittadella in 2012.

Goalkeeper Pierobon Andrea became the oldest player to appear in a professional Italian football fixture when he was picked by coach Claudio Foscarini for Cittadella's 1-1 draw with Modena on Saturday.

Pierobon has said football has changed considerably over the past three decades as he donned his gloves at the age of 45 and a half to appear for Cittadella in Italy's Serie B last weekend.

Born on July 18, 1969, Pierobon took the place of Alex Valentini, 26, and the chances are it will not have been...

David Trezeguet set to hang up boots and reject Modena offer - report

David Trezeguet has received an offer from Modena.

David Trezeguet is set to snub Modena's offer to extend his playing career and instead announce his retirement, according to a report in Argentina.

Trezeguet, 37, last week thanked the Italian Serie B side for making him an offer, but informed the club that he would not be able to give them a definite answer until the end of the current transfer window.

Modena president Antonio Caliendo used to be the ex-France international's agent and he made the approach to Trezeguet, who was last seen appearing...

Italy FA chief Carlo Tavecchio wants to cut Serie A to 18 clubs

UEFA has banned Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Carlo Tavecchio for six months following racist remarks he made last month.

ROME -- Italian Football Federation president Carlo Tavecchio hopes a plan to reduce Serie A from 20 to 18 clubs is approved this year.

Tavecchio told RAI state radio, "If it's not done in 2015 then we'll have to make other evaluations."

Tavecchio also wants to cut Serie B from 22 to 20 clubs.

He said, "The Italian sports system is imploding. The resources are diminishing. ... [The reductions] can return Italian football to a better level."
