Angers promoted to Ligue 1 after 21 years

Angers earned their way back into Ligue 1, grabbing the third promotion spot through a 3-0 victory Friday.

Angers ended a 21-year exile from Ligue 1 by clinching the third promotion spot with a 3-0 victory over Nimes.

The Maine-et-Loire club spent 23 years in the top flight but have bounced around the lower divisions in recent years.

Guy Ngosso's opener and a brace from Sacha Clemence at the Stade Jean-Bouin on Friday night secured third place in Ligue 2 and Angers will now join champions Troyes and Gazelec in reaching the first tier.

Ligue 1 reduces relegation spots from three to two from next season

Paris Saint-Germain were crowned champions of Ligue 1 following a 2-1 win over Montpelier.

The French Football League (LFP) has taken the radical step of reducing the number of teams relegated from Ligue 1 next season from three to two in order to give investors "more security."

The LFP's Administrative Council voted 13 to 1, with seven abstensions, in favour of the change, which will see only two sides promoted the top flight at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

"Investors need a little more security," LFP president Frederic Thiriez argued in L'Equipe on Friday. "Three up, three down is...

Nimes coach blasts former club president over match-fixing

Nimes coach Jose Pasqualetti has attacked former club president Jean-Marc Conrad over the match-fixing scandal which will see them demoted one division at the end of the season.

Following a hearing on Monday and Tuesday into seven Ligue 2 games last season, Nimes were found to have fixed four games as they battled successfully to avoid relegation.

A statement from the French Football League (LFP) on Tuesday evening read: "After reading reports and interviewing representatives of the clubs concerned,...

Nimes to be relegated from Ligue 2 after match-fixing probe

PARIS -- Second-tier French club Nimes will be relegated at the end of the season after their former president was found guilty of trying to fix matches.

After interviewing about 50 officials, players and coaches over two days, the French league disciplinary commission said on Tuesday that Jean-Marc Conrad tried to fix four matches as his club fought off relegation last season. He was banned from football-related activities for seven years.

Seven games involving Nimes were investigated after Conrad...

Ligue 2 match-fixing report finds Caen-Nimes 'understanding'

The 50-page report is the result of a two-month enquiry into seven Ligue 2 games.

A lengthy report into alleged match-fixing of Ligue 2 games last season has concluded that one match was subject to "an understanding" between the two clubs concerned.

The 50-page report -- drawn up by the former head of Paris' judicial police -- is the result of a two-month enquiry into whether seven French second-tier matches last season involving Nimes, who were battling against relegation, were fixed.

While the report uncovered details that suggested attempts to arrange results had failed in...
