Winston Reid and new West Ham deal a huge boost to Sam Allardyce

Sam Allardyce spoke ahead of his Premier League match against Chelsea about Winston Reid's contract and his own future at the club.

The news that Winston Reid has signed a new contract with West Ham is as surprising as it is welcoming.

With the 26-year-old becoming a free agent in the summer, a move across London to Arsenal or Tottenham had been expected, and Sam Allardyce had claimed the defender was "highly unlikely" to still be at the club next season.

Joint owner David Sullivan had other ideas, though, and managed to convince Reid that he has a good future at West Ham, getting the defender to agree to a new six-and-a-half-year...

Eden Hazard's goal enough as Chelsea edge West Ham 1-0 at Upton Park

The ESPN FC panel discuss why Chelsea have been able to maintain their lead atop the Premier League as they held on for a 1-nil victory over West Ham.

LONDON -- Eden Hazard's first-half goal was enough thanks to some superb Thibaut Courtois saves as Chelsea defeated West Ham 1-0. Here are three quick observations from Wednesday night's game at Upton Park.

1. Hazard provides the crucial goal

It was a night when Eden Hazard scored a rare headed goal and Chelsea once again showed their own mental fortitude to beat West Ham United 1-0. Despite how rocky this match was, the Premier League leaders just keep on rolling forward.

West Ham struggle against Crystal Palace as Alex Song form dips

Alex Song
Alex Song's dip in form has followed that of West Ham.

This weekend, Alan Pardew returned to Upton Park with a rejuvenated Crystal Palace side and won 3-1 to consign West Ham to another defeat. With only one win in their last 10 Premier League games, the Hammers have slipped to ninth in the table and their early season form has completely deserted them.

This, though, was another odd game to sit alongside the recent matches that have ended so frustratingly. With 22 shots at goal, West Ham actually exceeded their season's best total and in a tense 20...

West Ham must keep faith with Sam Allardyce amid poor run of form

Sam Allardyce is coming under heavy pressure after a run of one win in seven.

Life isn't brilliant for Sam Allardyce and West Ham at the moment. They haven't won in a month, have only secured one victory in their past ten Premier League games and in that time they also apologetically limped out of the FA Cup, beaten 4-0 by West Brom.

Little wonder there's the increasing sense that Allardyce will no longer be West Ham manager in the summer, when his contract expires, with apparently no discussion of a new deal from either Big Sam himself or club owners David Sullivan and David...

West Ham seek return to winning ways versus a familiar face

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce discusses how a good result against Crystal Palace on Saturday will get his team back on track to challenge the 'Big Boys' in the top six.

After the controversial 2-2 draw with Tottenham, West Ham face another local derby this weekend as ex-manager Alan Pardew returns to Upton Park with his Crystal Palace side.

West Ham fans are generally ambivalent about seeing Pardew back in the dugout at the Boleyn, remembering both good and bad times under the former Palace defender. The erstwhile Boleyn boss had a torrid time when he first arrived at Upton Park from Reading, but he gradually gained respect and promotion, eventually taking the...

West Ham's Allardyce must defend his tactics after Spurs draw

West Ham dominated for large parts of the game but ultimately claimed just one point.

West Ham suffered last-minute heartbreak at White Hart Lane as Tottenham came back from 2-0 down to secure a draw with the last kick of the match.

It was far more than Spurs deserved as the Hammers had dominated play throughout and never really looked in trouble, even after the home side pulled a fortunate goal back with just nine minutes to play. When the equalising goal came from a rebound off a saved penalty, Sam Allardyce will have been cursing his luck.

A win at the home of West Ham's fiercest...
