Ligue 1's fight for second and third place makes up for lack of title drama

Lyon and Monaco have the strongest shot at second place. Rafael, right, leveled to give OL a share of the points.

Forget the magic of a title race. It's overrated and anyway, in the end, except if you're watching English football (and probably just this year), the same teams always win: Paris Saint-Germain in France, Juventus in Italy, Bayern in Germany and Barcelona, Real or Atletico in Spain.

No, there is nothing like a huge mass sprint for the Champions League places. I'm being a touch ironic here, obviously, but the race for second, third and fourth place (depending on the country) is heating up very...

St Etienne left it late as Nolan Roux's brace helped keep alive Les Verts' hopes of European qualification with a 2-0 win against Lorient.

Roux's first - his fourth goal in five games - was almost kept out by the diving Benjamin Lecomte after Romain Hamouma had picked out the in-form hitman in the 76th minute.

The former Lille striker netted his second of the game in added time, slotting beyond Lecomte after Raphael Gueirrero missed his defensive header to let Roux in.

Defeat for Lorient leaves them...

St Etienne moved two points behind second-placed Lyon thanks to Nolan Roux's solitary goal in a 1-0 win in Bastia.

In a largely uneventful encounter, Les Verts looked like they were going to have to settle for a point until Sebastien Squillaci failed to make contact with Kevin Theophile-Catherine's delivery on 75 minutes and Roux was on hand to finish at the back post.

The visitors went close to scoring earlier in the game, just before the interval, but defender Loic Perrin's goal-bound volley was...

St Etienne maintained their hopes of European qualification thanks to a slender 1-0 win against relegated bottom-club Troyes.

Les Verts had to wait as late as the 75th minute to take the lead as Neal Maupay hit a first-time volley beyond Matthieu Dreyer from a Valentin Eyserric corner.

It was all that the hosts deserved after Dreyer had kept the scores level with smart stops from a Loic Perrin header and Oussama Tannane among others.

But Troyes almost stole a surprise point late on when Corentin Jean...

St Etienne moved to within three points of third place in Ligue 1 by securing a 2-0 victory at relegation-threatened GFC Ajaccio.

Les Verts took a 1-0 lead into half-time thanks to Nolan Roux's unstoppable strike from an acute angle on 14 minutes, set up by a superb counter-attack.

They doubled their advantage on 58 minutes, Kevin Theophile-Catherine reacting quickest to fire home through a crowded penalty area following a corner.

The hosts' best chances came in the first half when St Etienne goalkeeper...
