The U.S. Open Cup matters despite a lack of hype

After an early exit from the 2013 U.S. Open Cup, the Seattle Sounders redeemed themselves in the final against the Philadelphia Union as Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins' extra-time goals sealed the victory.

CHESTER, PA -- There's a kind of Brigadoon quality to a U.S. Open Cup final.

Seattle Sounders top Philadelphia Union 3-1 in U.S. Open Cup win

After an early exit from the 2013 U.S. Open Cup, the Seattle Sounders redeemed themselves in the final against the Philadelphia Union as Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins' extra-time goals sealed the victory.

CHESTER, Pa. -- Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins led the Seattle Sounders to their fourth U.S. Open Cup title Tuesday night, scoring in overtime in a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union.

Dempsey, the U.S. national team captain, scored in the 101st minute on a left-footed blast off Martins' feed. Martin scored in the 114th minute after speeding around Union defender Ray Gaddis and poking one past goalkeeper Zac MacMath.

"They just find each other," Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said...

In the 37th minute, Peguy Luyindula was pulled down in the box by Ethan White and converted the penalty kick. Three minutes later, Thierry...
