The Berlin-born has grown into the leader of the U.S. team's back line, and has impressed in the matches against Paraguay and Ecuador so much so that U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann has called him "the best centre-back at the Copa."

Jurgen Klinsmann: 'All of Europe watching' John Brooks shine for U.S.

The FC crew heap praise on U.S. centre-back John Brooks after his standout performance in the Americans' crucial win against Paraguay.

Jurgen Klinsmann says "all of Europe is watching" John Brooks after the center-back's standout performance helped the United States hold off Paraguay 1-0 in the Copa America on Saturday.

Clint Dempsey's goal put the U.S. ahead, but two yellow cards for DeAndre Yedlin early in the second half meant Klinsmann's men had to see off nearly 45 minutes with 10 men.

Brooks was a large part of that effort. In the first half, he made a highlight-reel play as he neutralized Paraguay's three-on-one break by...

United States head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has told Bild that John Brooks is like a young Per Mertesacker, adding that he's proud of Bobby Wood's move to Bundesliga club Hamburg.

Brooks, 23, had a standout season for Hertha Berlin until injury problems in late March dampened the overall impression of his and his club's season.

But despite a difficult run-in, the capital club finished the Bundesliga season in seventh, and they are set to play the Europa League qualifiers in late July.
