Football is DR Congo's focus before Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal

DR Congo qualified for the quarterfinals with a 1-1 draw in their final group game vs. Tunisia.

BATA, Equatorial Guinea -- Villa Celotti is an unusual team hotel. It is situated a five-minute walk from Bata's airport terminal and has the feel of a holiday camp, with small, prefabricated chalets sitting several rows deep, spreading back from a mediocre stretch of beach.

It is a somewhat seedy, discomfiting place and hardly the venue in which you would expect to find a professional sports team. For the 23 players and 15 backroom staff from Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), though, the...

Congo improbably on the cusp of African Nations Cup semifinals

Guinea are through to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after the drawing of lots in Malabo.

BATA, Equatorial Guinea -- "It was unthinkable for a second that CAF would not reject Rwanda's qualification to the group stage. We were expecting the decision."

Those were the wise words of Claude Le Roy, speaking to AfriqueFoot in August 2014. If there is a man who understands African football and knows how these things work, it is Le Roy. His current stint as manager of the Congo national team at the 2015 Africa Nations' Cup in Equatorial Guinea is his eighth appearance at the continental...

Level of play at African Nations Cup can improve, Yannick Bolasie says

Guinea are through to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after the drawing of lots in Malabo.

BATA, Equatorial Guinea -- Yannick Bolasie is reveling in Democratic Republic of the Congo's African Nations Cup run but believes the tournament has a long way to go if it is to match the quality of football he faces back home.

The Crystal Palace winger debuted for DR Congo, his parents' homeland, in 2013 and has been critical to their qualification for the quarterfinals in Equatorial Guinea -- scoring a vital equaliser in their opening game against Zambia. But the 25-year-old says that the level...

Draws dominate in African Nations Cup, but chaotic nature shines through

Ivory Coast manager Herve Renard joked about making Algeria cry ahead of their quarter final in the African Cup of Nations.

If you can see past the draws at the African Nations Cup, the group stage showed where the strength of the continent's football lies, where the rumblings of resurgence are coming from and where the stagnation still stews.

The first of those, where the powerful are, is in the north. Although only two countries from the region are competing in this edition of the tournament, both Tunisia and Algeria will feature in the quarterfinals.

The second, where the power could lie, is among two western heavyweights...

Senegal manager Alain Giresse to step down after African Nations Cup exit

Algeria sealed their place in the African Nations Cup quarterfinals after beating Senegal 2-nil.

Alain Giresse has confirmed he will no longer coach Senegal and has accused the country's media of conducting a "man-hunt" following their African Nations Cup exit.

Giresse, 62, led the Lions of Teranga into their final group-stage game against Algeria with the hope of reaching the quarterfinals.

However, a 2-0 defeat led to their elimination, and provoked a furious response from the Senegalese media. The press pack assailed Giresse at his postmatch news conference, which helped convince the former...
