Stephen Keshi signs new contract as Nigeria coach

ABUJA, Nigeria -- Stephen Keshi signed a two-year contract to continue as coach of Nigeria on Tuesday, calling it "a new page" after a tumultuous story so far that has seen him guide the country to the African title, resign, return, get fired and then be reinstated.

Keshi and the Nigerian Football Federation agreed the new deal after lengthy negotiations, putting Keshi back in charge ahead of the start of 2017 African Cup qualifiers in June and 2018 World Cup qualifiers later in the year.

Ethiopia to terminate coach Mariano Barreto's contract

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia -- The Ethiopian Football Federation will terminate national team coach Mariano Barreto's contract at the end of the month.

The EFF said Barreto will leave by mutual agreement halfway through his two-year contract.

EFF spokesman Wondimkun Alayou said the Portuguese coach hasn't made enough progress with the team and "was not worth the amount of money that he is being paid."

He said Barreto is being paid $18,000 a month and will receive three months' salary as a severance payment.

Gabon chosen as host of 2017 African Nations Cup

The FIFA presidential campaign trail moves to Africa this week, but it appears the race might already be over.

CAIRO -- Gabon will host the 2017 African Nations Cup in place of war-torn Libya.

Gabon, which co-hosted the tournament in 2012, was chosen on Wednesday in a vote by the Confederation of African Football's executive committee in Cairo.

Gabon was selected over rival bids from Algeria and Ghana.

Libya was initially scheduled to host the event in 2013, but swapped that tournament with South Africa to give it more time to be ready.
