The buzz began in the late 1980s and early '90s while the California teenager was teaming with his mother to dominate the Castaic-area team tournament scene. With his mother, Carol, as his partner, the duo took Angler-of-the-Year honors 11 times en route to becoming a dreaded force in southern California tournaments. By the time Martens hit the top draw circuits in the West in 1994, the 21-year-old angler had established the reputation of being a fishing phenom.
