Sometimes the biggest problem in dealing with a giant bass comes after the catch. For Ron Casner, a dedicated big bass hunter from Apache Junction, Ariz., his 17.46-pound largemouth taken from Canyon Lake (east of Phoenix) on Feb. 21 looked like a huge feather in his angling cap. Moreover, he stood to make $50,000 by taking advantage of an offer by the TTI Companies for certified state record fish taken on their hooks.

It appeared that the huge fish would eclipse the previous state record of 16.78 pounds, also taken from Canyon Lake. Unfortunately, timing was a problem. By the time Casner boated the monster (7 p.m.), the marina was already closed, and he couldn't weigh the fish on certified scales there.
