JULY 3
PLAYER 2007-08 TOTALS POSITION NEW TEAM OLD TEAM TERMS OF DEAL
Rob Blake
Age: 38
Games: 71
Points: 31
+/-: Minus-19
Defenseman San Jose Sharks Los Angeles Kings One-year, $5M
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: If GM Doug Wilson is trying to patch the big hole left by Brian Campbell's departure with Rob Blake, well, that's leaving a lot of space around the edges. No disrespect to Blake, but signing a one-year deal doesn't make the Sharks any faster or younger. If Blake was simply the finishing touch to the Sharks' offseason plan, then this wouldn't be as big a question mark.

Markus Naslund
Age: 34
Games: 82
Goals: 25
Points: 55
Left winger New York Rangers Vancouver Canucks N/A
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: This move has old-time New York Rangers written all over it. GM Glen Sather has bestowed a deal on a man who managed all of 25 goals last season and is a shadow of the player who posted 104 points in 2002-03. The Rangers hope there's something left, especially if Naslund ends up being the de facto new Jagr. If Naslund is Jagr's stand-in, that's definitely a move that's Off Broadway. Read more

Miroslav Satan
Age: 33
Games: 80
Goals: 16
Points: 41
Right winger Pittsburgh Penguins New York Islanders One-year deal
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: He is the kind of player who can convert those nice Sidney Crosby no-look passes. His playoff numbers aren't all that bad, either, with 38 points in 56 postseason games. Still, there are questions about Satan's heart on a Penguins team that will look to take that one final step forward. He doesn't jump out at you as a difference-maker in the clutch. One imagines he and no-nonsense coach Michel Therrien might not see eye to eye. Read more
Ruslan Fedotenko

Age: 29

Games: 67
Goals: 16
Points: 33
Right winger Pittsburgh Penguins New York Islanders One-year deal
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: Fedotenko bears a slight resemblance to Hossa and has a decent scoring touch; but, alas, he is more Marcel than Marian. If there is room for optimism, it's that he played a key role in the Lightning's run to the Stanley Cup in 2004, scoring 12 goals, including three winners in 22 postseason games. Can he take Ryan Malone's place on Evgeni Malkin's line? Hmmm. Read more

Ron Hainsey
Age: 27
Games: 78
Points: 32
+/-: Minus-7
Defenseman Atlanta Thrashers Columbus Blue Jackets Five years, $22.5M
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: Hainsey has terrific upside because of his size (6-foot-3, 209 pounds) and his puck-handling ability. He may not have matured defensively (he was a combined minus-26 the past two seasons in Columbus), but he's only 27; he has plenty of time to round out his game. Hainsey will be expected to log big minutes and help out a power play that was 23rd in the league in 2007-08. Read more
Sean Avery
Age: 28
Games: 57
Goals: 15
Points: 33
Left winger Dallas Stars New York Rangers Four years, $15.5M
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: Only time will tell what kind of impact the loss of Sean Avery will have on the Rangers, but it stands to be significant. When Avery was in the lineup for the Rangers, they were a much more difficult team to play against. He comes with all sorts of baggage, but Stars assistant GM Brett Hull has some history with Avery, thanks to their shared time in Detroit and should act as a nice buffer. The only question is whether Big D is ready for Big Sean. Read more
Marian Hossa
Age: 29
Games: 72
Goals: 29
Points: 66
Right winger Detroit Red Wings Pittsburgh Penguins One year, $7.45M
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: The deal makes eminent sense for the defending Stanley Cup champs, who now boast a fearsome forward contingent that includes some of the best two-way hockey players in the world, Hossa, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. Zetterberg will be unrestricted at the end of the 2008-09 season and GM Ken Holland will have to open his wallet, so the one-year deal gives both Hossa and Holland room to move. Can anyone say "repeat?" Read more

Wade Redden
Age: 31
Games: 80
Points: 38

Defenseman New York Rangers Ottawa Senators *-Six years, $39M
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: With talented defensemen in short supply, the Rangers filled a glaring hole in their lineup by adding Redden. His game fell off over the past couple of years, but he has the tools to once again be an elite player. He'll be counted on to help energize a moribund Rangers power play (22nd overall). Read more
Brian Rolston
Age: 35
Games: 81
Goals: 31
Points: 59
Left winger New Jersey Devils Minnesota Wild Four years, $20.25M
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: After being heavily courted by the Lightning, not to mention some 15 or so other NHL teams, the power-play specialist and hard-shooting forward will be a welcome addition to a Devils team that ranked 27th in goals per game and 25th on the power play. Read more
Brian Campbell
Age: 29
Games: 83
Points: 62

Defenseman Chicago Blackhawks San Jose Sharks Eight years, $7.142M annual average
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: With the smooth-skating Campbell, Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon has significantly upgraded a Blackhawks team that fell just three points shy of the final playoff berth in the West last spring. "This is a great day for the Chicago Blackhawks," Tallon told ESPN.com. Read more
Mark Streit

Niklas Hagman
Age: 28
Games: 82
Goals: 27
Points: 41
Left winger Toronto Maple Leafs Dallas Stars *-Four years, $12M
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: The good news Toronto is Hagman scored a career-high 27 goals for Dallas last season; the bad news is the well went dry late in the season (one goal in last 14 games). Hagman will get loads of power-play time and will almost certainly play on the top two lines.

Mike Commodore
Age: 28

Defenseman Columbus Blue Jackets Ottawa Senators Five years, $18.75M

• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: The man with the best hair in hockey is on the move again and may help fill some of the void created when captain Adam Foote departed at the trade deadline last February. Commodore should love playing under Ken Hitchcock -- he'd better given that price tag.
Darcy Tucker
Age: 33
Games: 74
Goals: 18
Points: 34
Right winger Colorado Avalanche Toronto Maple Leafs *-Two years, $4.5M
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: With the uncertainty over the availability of captain Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg, the Avs bought some insurance by signing Tucker to a two-year deal worth a reported $4.5 million in total. Tucker has lots to prove after slumping to just 18 goals last season. Denver may be the perfect place for a renaissance. Read more

• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: Joseph won't be expecting much playing time what with starter Vesa Toskala appearing in 30 straight games at one point last season. Nonetheless, it'll be heartwarming for Leafs fans to see Joseph in blue and white once more.

Olaf Kolzig
Age: 38
Games: 54

Goalie Tampa Bay Lightning Washington Capitals One-year deal
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: Kolzig was displaced as the Caps' starter with the addition of Cristobal Huet at the trade deadline. He'll battle Karri Ramo for the back-up job behind incumbent starter Mike Smith, who is an unproven quantity as a starter. Kolzig could end up being both a mentor and workhorse in Tampa.
Cory Stillman
Age: 34

Points: 65
Left winger Florida Panthers Ottawa Senators Three-year deal
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: Stillman hasn't put up the numbers he is accustomed to over the past couple of seasons due mostly to injury, but he is a steady point producer and power-play specialist who should help a Florida team that hasn't made the playoffs since 2000. Read more

Goalie Washington Capitals Colorado Avalanche Two years, $9M
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: In Theodore, the Capitals will be bringing in as many questions as answers. Do the defending Southeast champs get the netminder who stood on his head in the first round of the playoffs, or the one that fell to pieces in the second round as Colorado was swept by Detroit? Ty Conklin
Age: 32
Games: 33
GAA: 2.51
SV%: .923
Goalie Detroit Red Wings Pittsburgh Penguins One-year deal
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: Conklin will get a chance to play behind veteran netminder Chris Osgood, who has split playing time the last couple of seasons with the recently retired Dominik Hasek. Unless the Penguins are content to let Dany Sabourin handle back-up duties, this again puts the Pens in the hunt for a viable back-up for Marc-Andre Fleury.
Radim Vrbata
Age: 27
Games: 76
Goals: 27
Points: 56
Right winger Tampa Bay Lightning Phoenix Coyotes Three years, $9M
• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: Rebuffed in their attempts to sign unrestricted free-agent forward Brian Rolston, the Lightning continued their dramatic overhaul by signing Vrbata. The signing isn't all that big a surprise given that new Tampa Bay assistant GM Tom Kurvers was with the Phoenix organization for the past 10 years.

Brad Stuart

• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: Stuart was rumored to be headed back to the West Coast, but Detroit GM Ken Holland convinced Stuart to stay. Cup rings almost always carry more weight than smog and traffic jams. Stuart played most of the playoffs with Niklas Kronwall and the pair represent a nice alternative to the team's top pairing of Brian Rafalski and Nicklas Lidstrom. All four will return next year giving the Wings as good a top four defensive lineup as anyone in the NHL. Read more

• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: The Ducks took care of priority No. 1 Tuesday by locking up Perry.
