Comments
Is an intriguing OC prospect with loads of upside. Has good size and the frame to get even bigger. Has quick feet and very good mobility, especially for his size. Shows good initial quickness and the ability to get into position against one-gap penetrating DT's and NT's in the NFL. Shows the athletic ability to get downfield and consistently reach the moving target. He also shows good balance and lateral movement skills in pass pro. Has adequate overall strength is stronger in the upper body. Shows a powerful punch and the ability to jar defenders with initial contact. Has great intangibles and will work to get better. Is an excellent leader on and off the field. Intelligent, high-character player and person. Very "coachable".Lacks good starting experience. Only one collegiate season as a fulltime starter at OC position. Needs to improve his technique. First step is inconsistent. Needs to do a better job with his angles as a reach blocker. Also must improve his hand-placement. Has good upper body strength but is a tall OC with just a decent base. Needs to show more consistency when it comes to playing with leverage and he also needs to improve his bulk and lower body strength. Spencer redshirted in 2001. He played as part of a rotation (mostly at OG) during his redshirt freshman season in 2002 and then moved to the center position fulltime because of injury in 2003 and wound up starting five games. Spencer made his biggest improvement between his sophomore and junior seasons. As a junior in 2004, he started all 11 games at center and earned honorable mention All-SEC honors. Spencer doesn't have great starting experience and he is still a bit raw. He needs to improve his lower body strength and he will also need time at the NFL level to improve his overall technique. However, Spencer's upside is enticing. He has good size and even better size potential. He shows quick feet, good mobility and adequate upper body power as a blocker. Spencer has some versatility as an interior lineman with experience both at guard and center, which will give him more value early in his career when he can backup both positions. However, in our opinion, Spencer has the physical tools, intelligence and leadership skills to develop into a solid starter at the center position in the NFL, which is why he grades out as a second round prospect.
