When was the last time Auburn won in Knoxville? What's the secret to Houston Nutt's success at Arkansas? How good is Georgia's defense? Is South Carolina for real? Our SEC notebook addresses those questions and provides looks at Kentucky's low-powered offense, the "LSU way," Mississippi's struggles and much more.

Alabama

  • It's difficult to blame Alabama head coach Mike Shula for his conservative game plan in last Saturday's 27-10 loss to Arkansas.

After all, when you rush for 271 yards, you're supposed to win the game. But the Crimson Tide bogged down amid a sea of mistakes and missed out on chances in all three phases of the game to swing the momentum in their favor.

Case in point: Shula decided to punt on fourth-and-1 from his own 39 with about 13 minutes to play. Arkansas led 14-10 at the time, and Shula's rationale was that the Tide would get the ball back around midfield.

They did, but went three-and-out and lost valuable field position because of a holding penalty. Their next punt should have pinned the Razorbacks inside the Arkansas 5, but it was allowed to scoot into the end zone for a touchback.

  • Ray Hudson isn't going to rush for 170 yards every week, which means quarterback Marc Guillon has to be more effective throwing the ball. He was just 6-of-18 passing against Arkansas.

South Carolina's defense is better than Arkansas' and will feast on the Tide unless Guillon can hurt the Gamecocks down the field. Shula made it clear, though, that Guillon is his guy at quarterback.

"Marc is our starter, and he's going to be our starter this week," Shula said. "I want to make sure he knows I've got every bit of confidence in him."
