If the key to turning a losing program into a winning program is defense, then fifth-year Utah State coach Mick Dennehy is certainly on the right track. It's a good thing, too, because after this season, the Aggies are headed to the Western Athletic Conference, along with Sun Belt cohorts Idaho and New Mexico State.

In 2002, the Aggies' defense was ranked 111th in the nation. Utah State couldn't stop a good high school team.

Knowing something had to be done, Dennehy hired a new defensive coordinator -- Dave Kotulski. USU switched from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 alignment.

The results were impressive, even though the Aggies were able to win only three games during their first year in the Sun Belt.
