It wasn't too long ago that North Carolina was thrashing new ACC member Virginia Tech in a New Year's Day bowl game, the program was in the Top 10 and football in Chapel Hill wasn't just a warm-up for hoops season.

Those times seem light years away now to a restless fan base and a group of players who have gone 3-9 and 2-10 in coach John Bunting's last two seasons. The low point came in the 2003 finale when Duke raced across the field at Kenan Stadium to grab the Victory Bell from the Tar Heels for the first time since 1989. That was the 11th home loss in the team's last 12 games and put Bunting squarely on the hot seat heading into his fourth season at his alma mater.
