San Jose State is one of those Division I programs hanging on by the goodness of the community.
If there weren't some key backers from Silicon Valley willing to jump into the financial foxhole with war veteran head coach Fitz Hill, football would already be a distant memory. And even those computer wizards might not be enough to solve the solution.
Many members of San Jose State's faculty are more than willing to see football fade away and may force the student body to choose whether the sport lives or dies by year's end.
Lack of funds and a strong fan base have plagued San Jose State for years. Not everyone has taken notice of the Spartans -- because of all the moving and shaking going on in the WAC -- but that doesn't make it any less of a reality.
