They're grumbling in Austin after Texas' 65-13 loss to Oklahoma, their fourth straight defeat at the hands of the Sooners. Offensive coordinator Greg Davis and defensive coordinator Carl Reese are under fire and coach Mack Brown's support is slipping away among the rank-and-file fans. Those fans got even more to be angry about when Houston lawyer and deep-pocket alum Joe Jamail took a firm stand in support of Brown. "I'm one of the group that wants to give him a raise," Jamail told the San Antonio Express-News. "Mack has done a hell of a job. He fills the stadium up for them."

  • Texas halfback Cedric Benson was charged with misdemeanor criminal trespassing on Tuesday, two weeks after he allegedly broke down the door of a South Austin apartment in search of a stolen television set. In the spring of 2002 Benson was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, prosecutors in his hometown of Midland dropped the case for lack of evidence.

  • Brown, inspired by the play of quarterbacks Chance Mock and Vince Young, said this week he wishes he'd have used both Chris Simms and Major Applewhite in the second half of the 2000 season and throughout the 2001 season. Brown sat Simms for most of end of the 2000 season and sat Applewhite nearly all of 2001. With as much heat as Brown's taking, it doesn't make sense to revisit one of the most controversial series of decisions of his six-year tenure at Texas.
