Arizona State QB climbing the draft board
Mel Kiper's latest mailbag breaks down Arizona State QB Andrew Walter, the top offensive line prospects and more.
Q: Assuming quarterback Andrew Walter continues to throw the ball effectively and Arizona State to win, where do you see him going in the draft?
Rob, Dallas, Texas
KIPER -- Walter could eventually end up in the first round when all is said and done. He is on the verge of breaking into my Big Board of the top 25 draft-eligible players after throwing for 428 yards and five touchdowns in a win last week over Iowa. Walter has added 10 pounds to his 6-foot-5 frame and now knows coach Dirk Koetter's sytem inside and out, evidenced by his improved completion percentage, 11 touchdowns and just one interceptions this year.
He will also have spotlight games later in the year against USC and California, where he will go up against the Trojans' Matt Leinart and the Bears' Aaron Rodgers to see who the best QB in the league is. Those games will be extremely important for Walter as they will provide an opportunity to increase his stock and perhaps move ahead of one of the quarterbacks already in my top five (Akron's Charlie Frye, Purdue's Kyle Orton and UConn's Dan Orlovsky).
