Colclough leads small-school prospects
Mel's mailbag takes a look at the best small-school prospects in the 2004 draft as well as the possible strategies for a trio of NFL teams.
Q: I've heard about Hampton's Isaac Hilton, but who are the other top small-school prospects likely to go in the first four rounds?
Skip, Iraq
KIPER: The top guy would be Tusculum CB Ricardo Colclough, a speedy corner who picked off nine passes last season and is also an excellent kick returner. DE/OLB Roderick Green from Central Missouri State was a sack artist in college and is a fourth-round possibility with his athletic skills and ability to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. He has good closing speed and is strong in the upper body and could eventually be a contributor as a situational pass rusher at the next level. Delta State DT Anthony Maddox might not make the first four rounds but was dominant at the Division II level and should come off the board on the second day thanks to his size and speed (6-1½, 305; 5.00-second 40-yard dash).
Northern Iowa MLB Jonathan Harrell was very productive during his career and has his weight up to 242 with great upper-body strength and could be in that group as well. The final guy on that list would be CB Chris Thompson of Nicholls state, who is not only a big corner (6-0¼) but a special teams star who blocked 12 kicks, including eight punts, over the last two seasons.
