Running means winning (usually)

A quick look at the top rushers in the various Division I-A conferences reveals a connection between the running game and winning games.

A few weeks ago I discussed the correlation between the running game and enjoying success on the gridiron, no matter the level of competition.

So it should come as no surprise that the vast majority of running backs among the rushing leaders in their conferences are key entities on teams that have .500 records or better. Check the breakdowns below and you'll see firsthand how a consistent overland attack translates into winning football.

Of the 27 runners highlighted only three -- Alabama's Shaud Williams, California's Adimchinobe Echemandu and Louisiana-Monroe's Kevin Payne -- are starring on teams with losing records heading into this week's action.
