    Was it a September to remember? Not really. The season's first month mostly lacked the crucial, classic, entertaining games that mark the start to many seasons.

    The BCS-busters like Fresno State, Boise State, Utah, and Southern Miss provided some spark. Stanford came close to turning the championship chase inside out. But let's just say we're all glad October has arrived.

    This month things get serious, starting Saturday in the SEC.

    LSU can all but kiss goodbye the defense of its division, conference and national title hopes in one afternoon, unless the Tigers emerge from the hedges victorious. Georgia has to show that the 'Dawgs don't deserve the tag "Most Overrated." Before you get fired up Georgia fans, you have to admit that your team's ranking far exceeds its performance the opening month. I feel a little guilty voting the Bulldogs fourth. Why am I, then? It's on talent and expectations, not on deeds. Not yet, anyway.

    Rocky Top is where we'll be Saturday, for the old-fashioned, southern test of manhood that is the Auburn-Tennessee rematch of last year's Tiger smackdown. It was only 28-21, but when one side rushes for 264 yards and the other rushes for four … it feels real lopsided. And it's felt real embarrassing to the Vols for a year.
