COACH AND PROGRAM
Sammy West favors up-tempo basketball. He likes to push the ball up the floor and get after people on defense. It's a style that most college basketball players love. Yet, for some reason, Alcorn State's players didn't fully buy into West's system until late in the season a year ago. The result was an inconsistent year that got off to a slow start and picked up some steam late before ending with a two-point loss to Alabama A&M in the semifinals of the SWAC Tournament. For West, a long-time assistant to legendary coach Dave Whitney who was bumped up to head coach before last season, it was a case of it's tough being the man who follows the man-even though West recruited most of the players on the Braves' roster.
