Blue Ribbon Illustrated previews the 2004-05 college basketball season, exclusively on Insider.
The U.S.S. Macon was the first cruiser to sail at more than 500 feet above sea level when it entered the Great Lakes region for the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959.
Forty-four years later, Macon's hometown men's basketball team, the Mercer Bears, completed a historic ascent of its own. The 2002-03 squad added 17 wins to its record from the previous season, the largest turnaround in NCAA hoops since 1974.
