It didn't take head coach John Beilein very long to rebuild the West Virginia men's basketball program. The Mountaineers labored through an 8-20 season in 2001-02, but Beilein brought the team's record up near .500 (14-15) and put the Mountaineers back in the Big East Tournament during his first year on the job.

Last year, West Virginia took another step forward by compiling a 17-14 record (though it settled for a disappointing eighth-place finish in the Big East after posting a 7-9 record in conference games).
