It wasn't so long ago, Pete Gillen remembers, that he had more walk-ons than scholarship players. That was during his first season as head coach at Virginia, and the cupboard was more than a little bare.
He restocked it, built himself a Top 10 program, then watched as injuries and attrition devastated what he had constructed, like a flimsy house in a windstorm. It also nearly derailed Gillen's career, because of a lack of success that the coach couldn't hide under a thick layer of one-liners.
