Steve Shields was ecstatic to get the opportunity to succeed such names as Wimp Sanderson and Sydney Moncrief. But despite the chance to coach Arkansas-Little Rock coming at age 38, Shields would've liked for it to have arrived a week or two earlier.
Shields was chosen quickly after his old boss, Porter Moser, left to take the Illinois State job. But still it was April 10, three days before national signing day. So Shields had to re-recruit his recruits in a whirlwind that threatened to blow away some of those potential faxes with signatures.
