Pete Gillen didn't have much trouble rebuilding a Virginia program that he found in shambles back to respectability. It was that next step that has bedeviled the fast-talking Cavalier coach. He has never quite made Virginia an ACC or national contender.

"We were close," Gillen said. "Three years ago, we went to the NCAA and lost to Gonzaga by one. The following year, we were 9-0 [and ranked as high as No.4 nationally], when things started to slip. The past year, we lost Roger Mason to hardship and lost [point guard] Keith Jennifer at mid-season.
