When the 2002-03 season ended, Paul Hewitt appeared to have Georgia Tech positioned to contend for ACC and national honors in 2003-04. The Jackets finished smack in the middle of the nine-team ACC last season with a largely freshman-sophomore team. Hewitt expected to return his entire roster, including ACC Rookie of the Year Chris Bosh.

"After the Texas Tech game, Chris told his teammates that he was coming back," Hewitt said of the gifted big forward. "Right until the end, it was his intention to come back. But I said, 'Let's wait and see.' I didn't want him making any public statements that he might have to retract."
