Early season tournaments such as the Maui Invitational are great for college basketball. They offer teams, coaches and players the chance to test themselves against high-level competition, identify strengths and weaknesses, develop rotations, simulate the atmosphere of a postseason tournament, and most importantly, compete for a championship.

Four teams in the Maui Invitational -- North Carolina, Texas, Iowa and Louisville -- showed they could compete with anyone and can grow to be top-quality teams by the end of the season. Maui identified a potential juggernaut in North Carolina, a potential Player of the Year in Rashad McCants, and the most improved team in Iowa.
