Should the Spurs add a third wheel?
- For the second straight season, the San Antonio Spurs are basically a blank slate with two amazing building blocks still in place.
With half of the team's roster heading into free agency this year, the Spurs are at a crossroads of sorts. They know Tim Duncan is their power forward. Tony Parker, under almost every scenario, is their point guard. Rasho Nesterovic, the center they picked up in free agency last summer, is a staple at the five for the next five years. First-round pick Beno Udrih sounds like the perfect backup for Parker.
Starters Bruce Bowen and Hedo Turkoglu are free agents. So is prized sixth-man Emanuel Ginobili and two other key role players, Robert Horry and Charlie Ward.
The Spurs have been actively cutting salary in an effort to get far enough to under the cap to ... that's the question mark. When free agency begins July 1, the Spurs will be looking at over $14 million in cap room, but no one is quite sure what they'll do with it.
Will they use all of it to make a run at Kobe Bryant in free agency? Will they use it to facilitate a trade with New Jersey for Jason Kidd? Or, are they just clearing enough space to make nice offers to Ginobili, Bowen and Turkoglu without incurring the luxury tax?
Here's a look at what to expect as Insider continues its summer blueprint series.
