Former Phillies outfielder and current broadcaster Gary Matthews, the 1983 NLCS MVP, threw out the first pitch. ... Sanchez beat the Phillies twice in the regular season, allowing just two runs in 13 innings. He's 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA against them in the regular season, losing 1-0 for his only defeat. ... Research Notes
How Jonathan Sanchez bounced back from a tough first inning and kept the Giants in the game:
- Sanchez struggled early on with his control, and the Phillies took advantage with a patient approach. Sanchez threw 35 pitches in the first inning, only 16 of which were in the strike zone (45.7 pct), below his season average of 54.3 percent. The Phillies swung only 31 percent of the time in the first inning, third lowest for a Sanchez opponent all year. No Phillies hitter swung at the first pitch. They walked three times, including once with the bases loaded to give them a 1-0 lead.
- Sanchez started to command his fastball better after the first inning, throwing it for strikes 68 percent of the time compared to 58 percent in the first. This helped open things up for his secondary pitches. Phillies hitters finished just 1-for-9 against his non-fastballs.
- When Sanchez was able to get to two-strike counts, he was effective. Phillies hitters went to a two-strike count 12 times and only reached base twice (Oswalt single, Howard walk), compared to six times in 15 non-two strike counts.
How Roy Oswalt dominated the Giants, evening up the NLCS at one:
- Oswalt threw 70 fastballs, third most in any start this season. Of those 70, a season-high 38 were up in the strike zone. Giants hitters, especially Andres Torres, struggled with the high heat. They finished 0-for-8 on high fastballs, including Torres who was 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. Overall, the Giants were just 2-for-18 against Oswalt's fastball, including six of his nine strikeouts. That's the most outs he's recorded on the pitch all season.
- As Oswalt went up with his fastball, he went down with his changeup. He threw 21 changeups, 13 of which were down in the zone. Giants hitters were 0-for-4 against Oswalt's change.
- Since coming over to Philadelphia, Oswalt is throwing his changeup more often with increased success, perhaps a sign he's adjusting to his park. With the Phillies, Oswalt is throwing his changeup 18 percent of the time and hitters have just a .441 OPS, compared to 11 percent of the time with a .573 OPS in Houston.
Jimmy Rollins broke out of his slump in a big way on Sunday, driving in four runs, three of which came on a bases-clearing double in the seventh to break the game open. Rollins tied his own record, shared also by Rich Aurilia, for the most RBI by a NL shortstop in a postseason game.
Since returning from a lingering hamstring injury on September 26, Rollins was just 5-for-34 entering Sunday's game, including the playoffs. Both of his hits on Sunday came off fastballs over the middle of the plate, nearly matching his totals against the pitch over the last 10 games prior to Game 2. [+]Jimmy Rollins
