It's often said, when making a Hall of Fame argument for this player or that one, that he "was the best player at his position for [X] years."

That's a lame argument. It can mean something, but it can also mean there just weren't a lot of good players at the position for [X] years. From 1964 through 1974, Bill Freehan was obviously the best catcher in the American League. I happen to think he deserves serious Hall of Fame consideration, but he hasn't gotten it, and won't.
