Sons of IX

Kim Mulkey and
Kramer Robertson

"The best thing I ever did for Kramer was not coach him," Kim Mulkey says, with the kind of insight she applied in guiding the Baylor women's basketball team to an undefeated season and a national championship last season. Kramer Robertson, a junior at Midway (Texas) High, is a top baseball prospect -- an instinctual infielder and pitcher who can dial up a low-90s fastball. He has already committed to LSU, if he doesn't turn pro after high school. Mom, meanwhile, has an .811 winning percentage over 12 seasons in Waco, and she won two national titles (in 1981 and '82) as a point guard for Louisiana Tech. All the years in the spotlight taught her to shield her son from the glare. "I made sure he played sports because it's what he wanted to do," Mulkey says, "not because it's what he thought we wanted him to do." As usual, Mom knew best.
