Good for the Tigers for getting Gary Sheffield. None of the supposed negatives to this deal from their end (giving up prospects, Sheffield's age, injury, pricetag) are more important than the big picture, which is winning.

Let's discuss this surprising trade from a fantasy baseball aspect as well, with random thoughts:

-If I were the Tigers, I wouldn't be worried about any of the negatives. Detroit had the best record in baseball much of the season, and Jim Leyland isn't going to be managing another decade. The team wants to win now, and certainly, after losing in the World Series to an inferior team, it's ready to. Money and age shouldn't be important under those terms if you're adding a critical lineup piece. It can be argued few teams needed a guy like Sheffield as much as the defending AL champs did.
