CHICAGO -- Jonathon Niese spoke with Terry Collins by telephone and told the manager he is confident he will avoid surgery on a partially torn rotator cuff.

Niese, currently on the disabled list, received the initial diagnosis last Friday after an MRI and exam at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

He is due for a follow-up MRI next week to see if some healing has taken place.

Collins hopes Niese can begin a throwing program assuming that medical exam next week turns out well.
