CHICAGO -- Ruben Tejada is due to begin a rehab assignment later this week, Terry Collins said.

The manager expects Tejada will begin the minor league work in the Gulf Coast League, but also will play at Triple-A Las Vegas before completing the assignment.

Tejada landed on the DL on May 30, during the Subway Series, with a right quadriceps strain. At the time, Tejada was in a 1-for-17 rut. His average had dropped to .209 and he was in danger of a demotion.

Collins expects Tejada will return to the majors once the rehab assignment is over, not be optioned to the minors. Still, the manager indicated, it is too soon to determine how he might divvy playing time with Omar Quintanilla, who has been productive in Tejada's absence.

Quintanilla, incidentally, needs to get a day off soon. Collins would use Jordany Valdespin at shortstop unless Justin Turner happens to return from the DL before then.
