WHAT IT MEANS: The Mets' three-game winning streak is over. After their sweep of the Rays, the Mets couldn't follow it up at home against the Central-leading Reds. At least, not on Friday.
BAY WATCH: Jason Bay is hurt again and it appears to be serious. Bay knocked his head against the left-field wall and it resulted in an inside-the-park homer for Jay Bruce in the second inning. For Bay, it looked as if it could be another troublesome issue in his disappointing Mets tenure. For now, the Mets are calling it a "possible concussion."
NOT A GEE THANG: Dillon Gee wasn't helped by Bay, but he didn't help himself either. At least, early.
After the homer he gave up another run in the second on a single and a Ryan Ludwick double. In the third, Gee hit Joey Votto in the back. Votto didn't look happy. A moment later, Brandon Phillips went yard and the Mets were already down four runs.
Gee settled down eventually and ended up leaving after allowing the four runs, three earned, in six innings. It was a pretty nice recovery. Still, he dropped to 4-5 on the season.
RETALIATION: In the eighth, Sean Marshall hit David Wright near the midsection. It seemed to mostly graze Wright's shirt. But there was a message in the pitch. Gee hit Votto so the Reds took at shot the Mets' star. It is definitely something to watch the rest of the weekend.
NIEUW-MAN:With Bay hurt, Kirk Niewenhuis figures to receive even more playing time. In the sixth, he got the Mets on the board by delivering a solo shot. It made it 4-1. It was Niewenhuis' third homer in two games. Scott Hairston, who replaced Bay in left on Friday, also went yard. Hairston is second on the team with nine homers. Only Lucas Duda (10) has more.
WHAT IS NEXT: Well, REO Speedwagon is playing Citi after this game. On Saturday, the Reds and the Mets get it on under the lights. Game time is 7:10 p.m. The pitching matchup is Homer Bailey (4-4, 4.35) vs. Jonathan Niese (4-2, 3.69). On Sunday, Johnny Cueto (7-3, 2.46 ERA) faces Chris Young (1-0, 3.38).
