Looking to jumpstart Jason Bay by giving him protection, and potentially some fastballs with Jose Reyes on base, Terry Collins strongly intimated he is going to put the left fielder in the No. 2 hole in the lineup soon.

Collins only slightly hedged because he had yet to broach the topic with Bay.

Bay has started only two games in his career in the No. 2 hole -- Oct. 3, 2009 with the Boston Red Sox, and then July 16 of last season with the Mets against San Francisco. (The Mets were nonetheless shut out for the second straight game, 1-0 by Barry Zito.)

Bay is hitting .129 (4-for-31) in his past nine starts.

"We're going to try something," Collins said. "I've got to address it with Jason. We've got to get him some protection. There's no question about it."
