Terry Collins does not expect any special restrictions on rotation newcomers Chris Young and Chris Capuano, who are trying to reestablish themselves following shoulder and Tommy John surgeries, respectively.
Both pitchers appeared at the major league level last year -- Young having the fewer appearances, with only three in September after missing virtually the whole season.
“As of right now, the answer to that is, ‘No,’” Collins said about restrictions.
Capuano, in fact, has been throwing bullpen sessions in Florida the past week.
That doesn't mean the Mets won't be somewhat cautious. That goes for all players with recent injuries. Collins cited outfielder Jason Pridie as an example.
"Jason Pridie, he’s as good a defender as this game has," Collins said. "His game is about his legs. Well, he had two bad pulled hamstrings last year. So even though he says, ‘Hey, I feel great,’ and is back to being strong again, it’s going to be a process, building up. … We’re not going to ask him the first few days of camp when we do our conditioning and running at the end of those days to try to start sprinting.
"Look, let’s just see where we are. It’s the same thing with both Chrises. Capuano has thrown some bullpens. He’s getting a feel for the mound. And Chris Young may be the same thing. But it’ll be a process. Obviously in the position those guys are in, no pitcher is going to try to make that team in his first outing. It will be a little bit of a slow process.”
Collins said he would start to map out a plan Friday, when pitching coach Dan Warthen arrives at the complex for the first time this year, in advance of pitchers and catchers officially reporting Tuesday.
