Chris Carter, dubbed "The Animal" for his work ethic, has signed a minor league deal with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Carter, who was acquired in the August 2009 trade for Billy Wagner, was non-tendered in December to free up 40-man roster room.

He will earn $12,000 a month in the minors, and a prorated portion of $420,000 at the major league level.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
