The Mets have requested permission to speak with Detroit Tigers assistant GM Al Avila, the Detroit Free-Press reports. Avila was on ESPNNewYork's initial list of potential candidates. The Mets have yet to interview a minority candidate. Avila was raised in Florida and is Hispanic.

A Mets spokesman said earlier this evening no further interviews had been arranged beyond the five conducted this week.

A vice president/assistant GM with the Detroit Tigers since 2002, Avila was a finalist for the Seattle Mariners job that went to Jack Zduriencik. While with the Florida Marlins, he oversaw drafting of Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Beckett and signing of Miguel Cabrera.

Avila's official Tigers bio says he interviewed for GM positions with the Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks and was a finalist with Seattle and Arizona.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
