The Giants needed a backup running back after Brandon Jacobs signed with the Niners and they used their first-round pick on Wilson.

Jerry Reese admits there were several choices at 32 with several players unexpectedly having dropped, but the general manager said Wilson was at the top of their board and also addressed a need. Reese did say it was fair to say Wilson was the second running back on their board.

This is the first running back the Giants have selected in the first round since taking Ron Dayne from Wisconsin in 2000. Wilson should immediately come in and compete to be Ahmad Bradshaw's backup and provide the team with solid insurance in case Bradshaw's surgically repaired feet and ankles act up. He should also help boost a running game that finished last in the NFL during the regular season and provide a spark to the kick return game as well.

THE 411: Wilson was a first-team All-American. He tied the school's season-record with 10 100-yard rushing games. He rushed for 1,709 yards and nine touchdowns last season and averaged 122.7 yards per game. He also caught 22 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown. He can return kickoffs and has two touchdowns on kickoff returns. He had 2,253 all-purpose yards last season. Can improve in pass blocking, according to Tom Coughlin. But has "big-play" potential and ability to become a lead back down the road.

Wilson can, like Jason Pierre-Paul, do several back flips. Also known for his energetic personality.

HOW HE FITS IN: Wilson joins a backfield that includes Bradshaw, D.J. Ware, Da’Rel Scott and Andre Brown. With Brown having to serve a four-game suspension to start the season, Wilson should come in and compete for the backup spot to Bradshaw and provide the team with depth and insurance in case Bradshaw's achy feet act up.

PROJECTED IMPACT: The potential is there for Wilson to be the second running back and be the primary kick returner as well.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: "Terrific football player," Reese said. "This guy loves to play football. He is fast, he is productive, he can do anything you want him to do. He can catch the ball and return kicks. He is a good piece to put in our running back stable."
