UT's Marquise Goodwin qualifies for Olympics

June, 24, 2012
Marquise Goodwin is going to London.

The Texas senior wide receiver and Rowlett product qualified for the Olympics on Sunday by winning the long jump event at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Ore.

Goodwin’s career-best leap of 27-foot-4 (8.33 m) on his final attempt secured the victory, breaking a tie with second-place finisher William Claye.

With the win, Goodwin became the first collegian to win long jump titles at both the NCAA Championships and U.S. Olympic Trials in the same year since 1960.

What does this mean for Goodwin’s final season on the football field? Luckily for the Longhorns, he won’t have to miss much during his trip overseas.

Texas opens fall camp on Aug. 2. Goodwin’s qualifying round in London is Aug. 3. The long jump finals are the following day.

From there, Goodwin will hop on a plane and rejoin his Texas teammates on the practice field.

“He’s been a guy that’s handled both sports very well, and that’s a difficult thing to do,” Texas coach Mack Brown said earlier this month. “Unlike last year, he can get back pretty soon and still have some preseason work before we open up the first ballgame.”

Former Longhorn Sanya Richards-Ross also punched her ticket to London on Sunday with a win in the women’s 400-meter dash. Richards-Ross’ time of 49.28 seconds set a new meet record.
