Ex-Tech star Emmett still has NBA dream
The 35th pick in 2004 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics participated in the 24th annual Dallas Fed X Pro-Am Basketball Classic at IAD Sports Complex on Saturday and Sunday to stay conditioned during the offseason after completing a season in China.
Emmett was traded to Memphis on draft night and made his only eight NBA appearances with the Grizzlies his rookie year. The Dallas native played on the Dallas Mavericks' summer league team last year in what was his last stint with an NBA organization.
“I miss it,” Emmett said. “I love watching it and I loved being a part of it. I want to get back, but I’ve been blessed. God has been good to me. I can’t complain.”
Emmett has bounced around European basketball leagues, the NBA Developmental League and the Chinese Basketball Association, where he scored a CBA record 71 points in a game in 2010.
Emmett said China would be his first option if he had to play overseas, but returning to the NBA is his goal.
“My agent was talking to a few teams and we’re just waiting around to see what’s up with the lockout,” Emmett said. “I’ve been playing overseas and having a great career. I’m looking forward to continue.”
Emmett led the Red Raiders to the NCAA tournament twice during his four years under head coach Bob Knight. The all-time leading scorer in Texas Tech history averaged 20.6 points per game during his senior season at Texas Tech. Emmett was also the first player in Big 12 history to be named to the All-Big 12 First Team for three straight seasons.
